WHY DEBATE????

Why debate...?

1. Critical thinking skills can be enhanced...
Rebuttals:
  • Really now? Some debaters just read their notes and could go on and on without looking at anybody.
  • Another thing, most of the Deputy Prime Ministers and Deputy Leader of the Opposition just "parrot" what the first speakers have just said. They just continue what his/her first speaker started.

2. To enable us to rationalize...
Rebuttals:
  • This is one of the problems among debaters! Some debaters give a very short argument. Some cannot even consume half the time allotted to them to deliver their thought.
  • There are also times when the debaters may overlook some essential facts.
3. To be able to learn to work under pressure and time management
Rebuttals:
  • In debate, people still do not practice time management since they tend to exceed or lack the time being allotted.
  • WORK UNDER PRESSURE. Probably one of the most hated in debates. I mean come on! Can you really work under pressure? You would have jumbled ideas most of the time that even you yourself cannot understand what the heck you're talking about

4. To defend our beliefs...
Rebuttals:
  • The beliefs of some debaters have a tendency to be distorted, unrealistic and irrational. If this were the case, then, the other team would have the upper hand in the debate.
  • In debates, it isn't always about our beliefs but to be able to defend the motion you are assigned to.

5. To come up with a sound solution...
Rebuttals:
  • There are times that the proposed solutions do not even beneficial.
  • Sometimes the solutions may be made but they are never implemented. So, in the end it was useless to even propose solutions when it will never be used.

6. To clear ambiguous details of the arguments...
Rebuttals:
  • Details presented by debaters are not always well explained. There are those who present points that are very broad, which would always lead to attacks from the other teams.
  • There are some given explanations that are not even related to the arguments or points stated. Weird but nevertheless true.

7. To learn more about the different opinions or point of view of other people and be open-minded about them...
Rebuttals:
  • Contradiction of opinions makes it hard for each team to understand each other. If not for the adjudicators, these debates would probably end up in fist fights.
  • Insulting the opinions of the others can never be absent. The reason for this would probably be the desire to win. BADLY...
